Pippi the burrowing greyhound

A little princess.

The Pipster is the worlds most pampered and decadent little greyhound. And the most affectionate.

At night, when she runs upstairs to go to bed, she refuses to lie down on her super cushy L.L.Bean bed. She stands there looking at us until we bring out the blankets from the closet. Her bed must have her blankies. Only then will she lie down.

She has heard the story "The Princess and the Pea". And since she believes she is a princess (she misunderstood the title, in her mind she changed it to "The Princess is The P"), well, she wants to be treated like one and sleep on many, many mattresses and blankets.

She likes to be tucked in. Even if it's 80 (27) degrees outside. Now she is happy. She'll stay under her blankies all night.

In the morning, this is Pippi:

Come on, Pippi, we got to wakey, wakey!

Where did she go? You probably didn't know that greyhounds are burrowing animals. Notice that she got up, turned around, and lay back down again. Some mornings we see no part of her at all. Other times she just hides her head. Time to play the game Where is The P? No energetic jumping out of bed for the Pipster, she likes to be woken up with morning spoiling*. Morning spoiling is the best**.

Greyhound owners are a little nuts.

* The word spoiled is a very positive word in our house. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that other people may misunderstand when we say that a dog is spoiled. In our house it just means somebody who likes their spoiling. We love for all dogs to be spoiled.

** Morning spoiling is especially good for shy greyhounds, the ones who pretend that they don't care about being petted. In the morning, when they are relaxed, they forget to keep up this pretense.

  5. Yep, I'm with you...spoiled is good, I do know there's that 'spoiled' that means 'ruined' but that's definitely not what we're talking about here! Pippi is a beauty and funny and sweet with the blankies and the gentle morning rituals. Love it.

  6. What a cutie! I love how she wraps herself in the blankets. :) My friends cat used to tuck herself in a blanket that way when she felt chilly. Made for a curious meowing lump on the couch. :)

i love how her little back kangaroo paws stick out. polar fleece and velour type blankets are the best. they don't fall off when they decided to walk around looking for a cold spot on the bed. and they can self-burrito like princess and the p.

  9. Greyhounds have an elegant body shape ... like that of horses ... The Pipster is most certainly a royal princess! It's just amazing how shy she looks in the pictures. Thanks for sharing them. :)

  12. You can never have too much spoiling! I love it when they are all sleepy and sooky first thing in the morning. I wish mine would stay put all night. I might need to invest in more blankies!

  15. Ahhh, so cute. I think whippets are burrowers who are used to being spoiled too. I found that out when I dogsat one and he refused to sleep anywhere but in bed with me, where he proceeded to burrow like mad all night!

  19. I am so laughing out loud. I heard once that this is called "turtling" for humans to do it, anyway....I heard it causes you to have headaches in the morning due to lack of oxygen (kinda like a hangover). I don't know if that is true of burrowing dogs? lol, lol, lol!!!

  22. Pippi acts just like our Tara (who is a spoiled princess - we love her to bits). I bet both girls can smell kibble through twenty mattresses! :-)

  23. One of mine burrows too. I'll go in the bedroom and find Charis has made herself into a blanket burrito, and always with her head covered.

    Love the ice-blue camisole.
